Part 2: Interview with The Style Agency – Top Bridal Style Tips

February 7, 2018

Following Part 1 of our Interview with Bridgette Kirk, Creative Director of The Style Agency, we’re pleased to bring you Part 2 where Bridgette shares her top Bridal Style tips to help you get the most out of the upcoming One Fine Day Wedding Fair (and give you the chance to receive a FREE Style Agency Bridal Shopping experience of your own).

FTSL: What is the first thing a Bride-to-be needs to know about bridal style?

BK: That they need to wear the wedding dress, the wedding dress does not wear them! By that I mean that bridal style needs to be tailored to the individuality of the bride and her wedding, not imposed upon her from a one-size-fits-all style guide.

FTSL: What factors determine the best style for a bride?

BK: So many! We prefer to take a whole-of-wedding approach so it’s as much about the bride in context of the entire wedding environment. For example, you might not want a high-fashion, ultra-modern dress for a wedding set in an ancient castle, anymore than you would want a full length regal ball gown with a long train for a beach wedding.

FTSL: What about individual style?

BK: Before we even look at dresses, we conduct a full colour analysis for our clients. Even though most brides still opt to wear white, there are infinite shades, tones, and textures of white and not all of them suit everyone. We help our brides understand what will best suit her complexion and style. This is a very useful starting point to then determine complementary colours for bridesmaids, flowers and so on.

FTSL: What about different shapes and sizes?

BK: After the colour analysis, we do a body analysis so we can start looking at what silhouettes will best accentuate our bride’s best features. We determine if her body shape is petite, pear, hourglass, inverted triangle, rectangular, column, or apple and show which dress shapes and features will pronounce her attributes and denounce the aspects she’d rather conceal. We explain how we can work with different fabrics, cuts and colours to make her look and feel her best.

FTSL: But what if she has her heart set on a colour or style that just doesn’t suit her?

BK: Ultimately it is the brides decision but we dig a little deeper to find out what it is about that particular colour or style that she likes and through education, we empower our client to include those aspects in a more flattering way. Of course these are skills and knowledge that she can apply to the rest of her wardrobe as well.

The best thing we can do though is take her out for a Bridal Shop and let her try on that dress and then try on something our experienced stylists believe will suit her taking into account her personal style and preferences. That’s one of the reasons we work with such a broad range of stylists with different specialties – so we can match clients to stylists who get their vision and know where to find it. We do ask our brides to approach their bridal shop with an open mind and adventurous spirit.

At the end of the day, we’re in the business of making our bride look and feel the best she can on her wedding day so if she’s happy and confident about her choice, so are we.

FTSL: What about budget? Is Bridal Styling a luxury few can afford?

BK: Not at all - in fact we’ve saved many expensive mistakes – wedding dresses are rarely refundable no matter how regrettable your choice! There are many tricks of the trade that can save a lot of money once you know them.

It’s not simply a matter of knowing when and where the industry sales are, it’s also knowing if and how off-the-rack dresses can be altered to look like the gown was made for you; where to get alterations outside of the boutiques; knowing what to spend money on and where to save it (for example, don’t skimp on embellishments that can make an expensive gown look cheap, but you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune on a veil); tap into the thriving vintage and pre-loved bridal market; or even choose a dress with re-sale in mind. Some corners can be cut, other short cuts lead only to regret – we have the experience to know the difference.
