Firstly, my apologies if you’re now have visions of Cher singing in that outfit. Secondly, if I had a dollar for every time I heard, “If I could turn back time, I would have employed a wedding planner”, I could shut up shop and retire on the proceeds!
As a wedding planner, the reasons for this retrospective longing are obvious, but to couples at the beginning of their wedding journey, it might not be so clear. In short, you can’t possible know what you don’t yet know! Unless you’re a serial bride/groom, you won’t have been through this process before and of course the hope is, that you won’t go through it again.
What you may know is that weddings are expensive and planning your own may seem like a good way to save money, especially considering that the average wedding in Sydney costs in the vicinity of $60,000. Of course there are infinite variables, such as venue, number of guests, quality of products etc., that go into making up that figure, and there’s much you can do to change the bottom line. But what that figure doesn’t include is the value of your time.
The average wedding takes around 250 hours to plan. If you were to assign an hourly value to your time and multiply it by 250, you’d very quickly see your budget blown! Of course, the more your decide to do on your own, the more time it’s going to take to research and source the inexhaustible supply of wedding vendors, products and services.
Luckily, there is a plethora of online tools these days to assist you in your planning such as spreadsheets and checklists. In fact, Google will quickly become your best friend (or worst enemy) as you spend hours, days, weeks trawling through hundreds of wedding industry websites, trying to discern one from the other… and that’s just to make your shortlists.
Armed with your shortlists, you can then look forward to numerous meetings, site visits, negotiations, contracts, payments, reminders, questions, changes, communications, and so on and so forth. If this doesn’t sound like much fun to you, or if you can think of better uses for your time, you’re likely to be one of those people who wish they knew then what they know now and had hired a wedding planner!
